Late French Immersion is a program of choice that runs from Grades 6 through 12.  Students enter the program in Grade 6. No prior knowledge of French is required to enter French Immersion. The Late French Immersion program is available to all Grade 6 students in the Chilliwack School district. Students study French and follow the regular BC Curriculum Learning Outcomes. By Grade 12, students graduate with a bilingual Dogwood.

 

  • To produce students who are able to understand and communicate in French and English.
  • To allow student to develop linguistic and cultural knowledge within a dual-track program which supports a spirit of positive appreciation and respect.
  • To foster the physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and creative development of students.
  • To develop respect, awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the French and English Cultures and   values.
  • To enable students to pursue further education and careers in either language.

We believe this approach promotes tolerance and understanding among our students. We also believe it provides opportunities for interaction between the English and French Immersion programs to the benefit of all students.

 

Students who are committed, have parent support, have good work habits and who meet expectations in language arts will be successful.  Good school citizenship is also important.  Prior knowledge of the French language is not required.

 

French Immersion is an opportunity for students to experience a whole new world.  With this age of information, communication, technology and travel, every different learning opportunity opens more career doors to students. Learning a second language not only increases self confidence and independence, but also strengthens the language skills in the mother tongue.
