Programs

Late French Immersion is a program of choice that runs from Grades 6 through 12.  Students enter the program in Grade 6. No prior knowledge of French is required to enter French Immersion. The Late French Immersion program is available to all Grade 6 students in the Chilliwack School district. Students study French and follow the regular BC Curriculum Learning Outcomes. Students are encouraged to stay in the program through to grade 12 and receive a bilingual graduation certificate.

  • In grade 6, 100 percent of the BC  curriculum is taught in French (emphasis is on oral French).
  • English Language Arts and electives in English are reintroduced in grade 7, while other subjects continue to be taught in French.
  • In grades 8-10, 33 percent of the BC curriculum is taught in French and the rest in English.
  • In grade 11 students take French and Social Studies in French.  All other courses are offered in English.
  • In grade 12 students take one block of French and all other courses in English.

Program Goals

  • To produce students who are able to understand and communicate in French and English.
  • To allow student to develop linguistic and cultural knowledge within a dual-track program which supports a spirit of positive appreciation and respect.
  • To foster the physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and creative development of students.
  • To develop respect, awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the French and English Cultures and   values.
  • To enable students to pursue further education and careers in either language.

We believe this approach promotes tolerance and understanding among our students. We also believe it provides opportunities for interaction between the English and French Immersion programs to the benefit of all students.
